What happened to the money raised
A Walk in the Moonlight creates rays of hope for women with breast cancer Over £13,000 was raised for breast cancer charities in a walk in the moonlight organised by Soroptimist International of Birkenhead. The money has been split between local breast cancer services and the national charity Breakthrough. Last June nearly 400 women (and some men) walked from West Kirby to New Brighton – a distance of around 10 miles – at midnight. The well-organised event drew people from around the UK in a variety of costumes and fitness levels. Pink items were de rigueur! This is the second event and promises to be a regular item on the annual walks calendar. The walk was well supported by staff from DASS and other Council departments. Last Thursday Birkenhead club celebrated its success and presented cheques to the local services. £2,500 to Elm House (breast cancer centre in Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology) for a plasma screen. £4,000 for a scalp cooler to prevent hair loss during treatment and a machine to improve lymphadenoma (swelling under the arm that distorts the shape) following surgical procedures. The balance £6,700 was presented to Breakthrough breast cancer charity. The scalp cooler and lymphadenoma machine will lessen the traumatic effect on body image that surgery, albeit successful surgery, bestows. This can be as devastating as the initial diagnosis. The club wish to thank all the people who took part and their friends who supported them through sponsorship. You have made a difference to many women’s lives!
