You're a what?

Soroptimist - it means best of sisters.

What is it?

An organisation for todays busy women, giving an opportunity to make new friends, have fun, and make a difference in our local community, nationally and internationally.  We have over 90,000 members in 126 different countries around the world.

Who are members?

Any woman who wants to have fun and make a difference!

What do you do?

At Birkenhead club we:

  • Meet regularly together
  • Raise money for local, national and international charities
  • Make new friends
  • Have fun

What sort of issues do you mean?

We are concerned in a general way with such areas as:

  • Health-We support Breast Cancer Awareness and local charities, i.e. Moonwalk for Breast Cancer.  We also work to support HIV/Aids orphans.
  • Education-We are supporting several education projects in South Africa.
  • Environment-To celebrate our 75th Anniversary we planted a copse of 75 trees in Arrowe Park.
  • Human Rights and the Status of Women-One of the many things we do is support a project for women prisoners helping them learn a skill to enable them to support their families.
  • International Goodwill and Understanding-We regularly visit our Friendship Link in South Africa and support many projects, particulalry those dealing with women and girls.

The United Nations?

Soroptimists are a non-goverment organisation with consultive status with UNESCO and WHO. Through out International network of professional women we are a good source of information about what is happening at local and national levels and provide a method of effecting change universally through local action.

How do you function locally?

We have an anually elected executive committee which meets each month.  Each member of the club is also a member of a committee concerned with the issues mentioned previously, or with a committee planning fund raising and social events.

What about the fun part?

Soroptimists are social women who enjoy a whole range of activities.  In Birkenhead we meet twice a month for food, for friendship and the opportunity of service.  Once for a social meeting with a speaker and a second to discuss club business.

When do you meet?

Our club holds meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, except August, at 7:30pm at the Bridge Inn, Port Sunlight.  The meetings and other events can be found on our What's going on page.

Can anyone attend?

We would be happy to welcome you as a visitor to our speaker meetings and social events.

Can anyone join?

Yes!  We are delighted to welcome all women who are interested in making new friends, having fun, AND making a difference.

Why should I join?

Being a Soroptimist connects you to other women in the Birkenhead area, across the United Kingdom, and around the world, enabling you to network with women from a wide range of businesses and professions.  When you are a Soroptimist you always have friends no matter where you are in the world.

In addition you will:

  • Get your voice heard on matters of local, national and international importance.
  • Become involved in service activities.
  • Widen your circle of friends.

Are the clubs all the same?

No, although we follow the same principles, we reflect the diversity of the communities from which we come.

What principles are these?

The objects of Soroptimism are at the very heart of the workings of our club and are read at the beginning of each of our meetings.

  • To maintain ethical standards in business, the professions and other aspects of life.
  • To strive for human rights for all people and particular, to advance the status of women.
